Las posibilidades de representación de la fotografía han sido descritas usando la célebre metáfora de John Szarkowski. La imagen puede ser una representación documental del mundo externo (ventana) o una representación expresiva del mundo interior (espejo), de donde surgen sus usos predominantes: el fotorreportaje y la fotografía de autor. Esta caracterización sigue el modo operatorio de la lógica binaria (sujeto-objeto, espíritu-naturaleza, etc.) que fundamenta al pensamiento metafísico occidental.

El Nacimiento de Antares expresa un proceso de transformación atravesado por Fernando Criollo. Es el relato visual de un retorno sobre sí mismo, aunque dicho “retorno” se entiende como un proceso que es, al mismo tiempo, desterritorialización individual y reterritorialización cósmica. El objetivo de este gesto no es, como pensaría la tradición occidental, conocer algo de la propia identidad que no se conocía, sino abandonarse por completo para devenir otro: devenir animal, devenir imperceptible, devenir cosmos. Es ahí, en los últimos suspiros de la estrella Antares, donde el autor se encuentra.

The Birth of Antares expresses a process of transformation undergone by Fernando Criollo. It is the visual account of a return to oneself, although this "return" is understood as a process that is, at the same time, individual deterritorialization and cosmic reterritorialization. The aim of this gesture is not, as Western tradition would have it, to discover something about one's own identity that was previously unknown, but to abandon oneself completely in order to become other: to become animal, to become imperceptible, to become cosmos. It is there, in the final breaths of the star Antares, that the author finds himself.
